Tree of Life leather blank book from Rio Rancho, New Mexico

Tree of Life leather blank book now available from Rio Rancho, New Mexico

Bedecked in Celtic imagery, this 4 1/2" by 6 1/2" leather-bound journal portrays the tree of life, with its far reaching branches snarled in a twisting canopy of Celtic knots and leafy foliage. Beneath this, the tree contorts into an ancient warped trunk and deep roots that spread out into a wide design of Celtic Knotswork weaving in and out of itself to create a wondrous, tangled pattern.

Each page within the journal is made from sturdy, earth-friendly paper shaped from cotton scraps found at the floor of garment factories and recycled biomass, such as fruit and vegetable husks.

The blank book is approximately 300 pages in length, with its pages stitched into the binding.

Home Grown: Alternative Evergreens

Just a handful of species make up the majority of evergreens planted. This lack of diversity is starting to be a real problem in areas where diseases are decimating both Scotch pine and Austrian pine, the two most commonly planted pine trees of the last 50 years. Fortunately, there are several less-common types of evergreens to consider.

Plant of the Week: Christmas Cactus

Home Grown: Hold the Salt and Save the Plants

Salt can cause problems for gardeners, especially if they live in a northern climate and use salt to clear ice from driveways or sidewalks.

There are many de-icing compounds on the market, and while they all set out to do the same job, there are some that are more friendly to lawns and other plants growing in the garden.

When shopping for de-icing agents, read the package label for ingredients. It may not be wise to choose the cheapest one on the shelf.

Home Grown: Protecting Evergreens in Winter

Evergreen plants can be harmed by the snow and ice of winter.

Inspect your plants for winter damage. Snow can cause
excessive bending down of evergreen branches to the point of breaking. These broken branches will always be weak if you try to bend them back up or tie them back up.

Consider cutting them off and, if possible, train neighboring branches to grow and fill in the gaps.

To avoid breakage or other injury, brush the heavy, wet snow off of the plants as soon as it stops snowing or even while it is snowing. Do not beat on the branches to remove the snow. Use a broom to lightly push or brush the snow off the branches.

Red Velvet Cake from Sacramento, California.

Red Velvet Cake now available direct from the baker in Sacramento, California.

Red Velvet Cake has long been a traditional American dessert.

During World War II, it is reported that the rationing of cocoa lead bakers to get creative with their recipes, forcing them to use boiled beets to enhance the color of the cakes.

Luckily, beets are no longer the ingredient of choice, and cocoa has been brought back to give a rich color and a delicate chocolate flavor.

This red velvet is a light, moist cake with a dash of cocoa to add the subtlest hint of chocolate. Frosted with a creamy, melt in your mouth cream cheese icing, this American favorite is the perfect way to send birthday greetings, holiday cheer, or just a simple and sure to be appreciated "thank you."

Freshly made at an artisan bakery, this 7-inch cake serves 6-10 and comes with 24 spiral candles.
